In Long Island, a funnel sucked a woman into her parents' grave
64-year-old New Yorker Joanna Cullen filed a lawsuit at the Long Island Cemetery after she was dragged into a funnel at the grave of her parents, writes New York Post.
The incident occurred 19 December 2016 of the year. Cullen leaned over to fix the bow on the wreath at the tombstone, when the earth suddenly collapsed, a funnel formed and began to “suck in” it.
“The woman fell, smashed her head on a tombstone, and also broke a tooth,” said the victim’s lawyer, Joseph Perrini.
She tried to call for help, but there were no people around, so she eventually spent several hours in the “funnel”.
"To be stuck in your parents' grave when you come to visit them on a cool December day before the sun goes down... it's terrible and it's traumatic," the lawyer said.
Cullen filed a lawsuit against the cemetery for 5 million dollars in the Queens Supreme Court.
The woman says that the terrible incident in the cemetery where her parents are buried - mother Evelyn and father John - left her in a state of emotional distress.
“I will never go back there again,” Cullen said, adding that she now fears walking in open fields and has “nightmares” and frequent headaches. She also needs psychological counseling, the lawsuit says.
The reason for the incident, according to the assumption of the plaintiff and her lawyer, was the poor strengthening of the embankment: the workers left the "underground void", which caused the formation of a crater.
“It’s outrageous that this could happen to anyone. We want the cemetery and its staff to learn a lesson. We want this to not happen to anyone else,” the victim’s lawyer emphasized.
