Kremlin hopes for a thaw in relations with the United States after Trump is elected

The election of Donald Trump as the new president of the United States is perceived in Russia with great hope. The new head of the White House should change the format of relations between countries, the agency writes today Associated Press.

AP journalists note that Hillary Clinton in the Kremlin caused obvious contempt. However, after the election results became known, Russian President Vladimir Putin tried to avoid malicious statements about the Democratic candidate. Now the Kremlin is full of hope that it will be possible to find a common language with Trump.

His words that Putin is a strong leader, promises to change US policy towards NATO, complaints about biased treatment from the press - all this, according to AP journalists, suggests that Trump and Putin have similar views on world problems.

In addition, it turned out that Russian authorities had contacts with the Trump campaign during the election campaign in the United States. Sergei Ryabkov, deputy head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, told the AP that contacts were with influential people from Trump’s circle. “I wouldn’t say that everyone, but many maintained such contacts with the Russian side,” Ryabkov said.

AP recalls that, according to the FBI, the Russian authorities, using hacker attacks, tried to intervene in the US electoral process. Including, it is about hacking the email of the head of the election headquarters of Clinton, John Podesta. The letters were published by Wikileaks and, according to AP, the Clinton campaigns did a lot of harm.

As recalled by the AP, Donald Trump has repeatedly said that he intends to seek improved relations with the United States. Vladimir Putin also said on the eve that relations that have recently degraded should be improved. However, Putin stressed that the initiator of the cooling was the United States.

However, the Russian authorities have taken a wait-and-see attitude and do not yet intend to applaud the new owner of the White House. Trump is expected to take the first steps. So far, he has only stated that he wants to build good relations with all countries. “We will look for common ground, not hostility. Partnership, not conflict,” Donald Trump said on the night of November 9 after being elected president.

Russia expects Trump to take very specific steps that could improve relations - first of all, the lifting of sanctions. “We believe that Trump should understand that sanctions harm US business in Russia,” said Sergei Glazyev, assistant to the Russian president, in an interview with ITAR-TASS.

The Barack Obama administration has repeatedly said that the issue of lifting sanctions is not yet being discussed. However, Russian authorities expect that with the arrival of the Republicans, the position of the White House will change. Director of the Carnegie Moscow Center Dmitry Trenin says that the Kremlin is counting on Trump’s pragmatism: “His approach to resolving issues, pragmatism, causes optimism in the Kremlin. And this is understandable - the politics of the Democrats is full of ideology and morality, and Russia had nothing to respond to this,” says Trenin. Now pragmatic politicians on both sides of the ocean have a chance to start a new dialogue.
