In Congress, prepared new sanctions against Russia because of the Ukrainian sailors

The congressmen, who are in the support group of Ukraine in the Congress, introduced a bill providing for the imposition of sanctions against 24 officials of the Russian Security Service.

The purpose of the sanctions is to force Russia to release 24 Ukrainian sailors who are being held by the Russian Federation, despite the decision of the International Tribunal. This was reported on the official page of American legislator Marcy Kaptur, writes Voice of America.

The project was co-sponsored by congressmen from the US Democratic Party, Marcy Kaptur, Mike Quigley and Republicans Andy Harris and Brian Fitzpatrick.

The full name of the SAILORS Act bill is “Stopping Aggressive Incursions on Liberty by Ordering Russian Sanctions.” It calls for sanctions against 24 senior Russian Security Service officials and their closest collaborators until Russia releases 24 Ukrainian sailors and three ships illegally seized near the Sea of ​​Azov on November 25, 2018.

The bill's co-authors, in a joint statement, condemned Russia's seizure of the Ukrainian sailors as "the latest in a series of harmful steps taken by Russia to impede democratic processes in Ukraine and the international legal order." The congressmen called on the international community not to stand by “while Russia increases its aggression in Europe and the world.”

The bill will send a strong signal of support to Ukrainian sailors and their families that “the American people do not forget their heroic struggle to protect democracy and sovereignty,” the co-authors are convinced.

• November 29 US President Donald Trump canceled the meeting with the head of Russia Vladimir Putin, which was to be held in Argentina on the sidelines of the G20 summit. The reason for the cancellation was the situation with the Ukrainian ships captured in the Kerch Strait, explained Trump in his microblog Twitter.
• The release of the sailors was also demanded by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron. But so far all the efforts of international diplomats have not brought results.
• April 16 Ukraine 2019 appealed to the maritime tribunal with a request to take urgent action in relation to Russia, in order to free the Ukrainian sailors and ships seized in the Kerch Strait.
• International Tribunal for Maritime Law 25 May He has made a decisionin which he ordered Russia to immediately release two Ukrainian warships and an auxiliary vessel and 24 Ukrainian sailors captured near the Kerch Strait in November 2018.
• Russia had a month to implement this decision, it expired on June 25. Ukrainian sailors are still in Russian captivity, criminal proceedings have been initiated against them. It’s hard to say what awaits Russia for violating the tribunal’s decision, because, according to lawyer Ilya Novikov, “no one has yet decided to violate the order of the UN tribunal".
• 17 July it became known that Ukraine and Russia agreed to exchange prisoners within a month. Deputy Head of the Administration of Vladimir Zelensky Vadim Pristayko clarified that the agreement was reached at a meeting of assistants and advisers to the heads of state of the Norman format, held in Paris.
