Public health officials in Riverside County, California, announced that the recently deceased 4-year-old child from Perris, who had serious health problems, had the flu.

This case is the county’s first flu death this season. Influenza spread usually increases in October or November and can last until May.

Although it might seem too early to think about flu, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in its most recent influenza vaccination guidelines stated that “vaccination should be done before the flu gets started” to provide the best protection against the virus. This means that people are advised to get vaccinated by the end of October.

But parents may have to think about vaccinating their children earlier. The CDC recommends that children aged six months to eight years who need two doses of the flu vaccine should get their first vaccine “as soon as possible after the vaccine is available,” since at least 4 must be passed before the second vaccination weeks.

It is also especially important that young children be vaccinated, as they are especially susceptible to serious complications of the flu and are more sensitive to the vaccine than adults. 130 children in the US died of influenza last year, and a recent CDC study found that the number of children hospitalized with flu-like symptoms was at least twice as high as expected.

Flu vaccines do not guarantee that a person will not get sick. For example, last year, efficacy was only 37% against adult influenza strains and 61% for children, according to CDC estimates.

However, the CDC recommends that all people over six months of age receive a flu shot every year, unless they have diseases that make vaccination unsafe. Vaccination reduces the risk of a person becoming ill and reduces the likelihood of transmitting the virus to other people, especially children and people with weakened immune systems.
