In 2020, illegal immigrants in California will be treated for free
Illegal adults in California will be eligible for Medi-Cal, the state-funded health insurance coverage for low-income people, starting January 1, 2020. Writes about it The fresno bee.
More than 1000 residents of Fresno County will receive new benefits as soon as the new year arrives and the law passed earlier enters into force.
New legislation will extend Medi-Cal benefits to adult illegal immigrants between the ages of 19 and 26. Children who are illegally in the United States are already eligible for free health care in California in accordance with a law passed in 2015.
According to Josh Hernandez, program manager for the Fresno County Department of Human Services, a total of 1 illegal immigrants between the ages of 613 and 19 were already in the county's Medi-Cal system, receiving limited payments for this program.
Over the past few months, the state has collaborated with counties to transfer Medi-Cal people with full Medi-Cal benefits that they can get from January 1.
Full-scale benefits cover everything, including prevention and primary care, while limited Medi-Cal covers only emergency care.
“They all received notice of this transition,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez noted that it is difficult for the district to assess how many new people will turn to them for medical insurance. Since there is practically no information about those who have never applied for Medi-Cal benefits before.
State officials estimate that some 138 adult illegal immigrants will receive full Medi-Cal benefits during the first year of law enforcement.
The budget approved by lawmakers this year included $ 98 million to offer health insurance to this group during the first year of the law.
The law makes California the first state to offer such benefits to adult illegal immigrants.
Children receiving benefits will no longer need to give up state-funded health insurance when they are 19 years old, as their benefits will be prolonged.
In California, according to UCLA, there are about 2,2 million illegal immigrants. And in the age group of 19 to 25 years, about 7% of the low-income state population does not have legal status in the United States.
Under the new law, Medi-Cal benefits are granted to illegal immigrants only until they are 26 years old.
California lawmakers said they intend to fight to expand the availability of free health care to all illegal immigrants in the state.
At the moment, Hernandez said that Fresno County has made sure that its residents are aware of the changes that will take effect on January 1.
County officials also contacted community-based organizations throughout the county to convey information to those who may be eligible for new benefits.
