A very bright super bloom is expected in California in 2023: where and when you can see it

After a year of severe drought last fall, California experienced much-needed relief. Unfortunately, in some cases quite heavy rains fell. On the other hand, it provides an opportunity to witness one of the most exciting manifestations of color and life in nature - super blooms. Millions of wildflowers will cover the west coast from Death Valley to Big Sur and beyond, creating a beautiful display of colors that can be seen from miles away.

What is a super bloom?

This is a rare botanical occurrence where an unusually large number of flowers sprout simultaneously from dormant seeds in the ground. This only happens when the right conditions are present.

In other words, it takes a large seed fund, the ideal amount of rain, dry weather afterwards to warm the soil enough, cloud cover at night for isolation, and no damaging winds or other harsh elemental encounters.

When can you see this phenomenon?

It is almost impossible to predict a super bloom, as well as its exact dates. The peak season is usually in early spring, but buds may start to appear around mid-February and into June. In some cases, flowering may start prematurely, as we have seen with the winter flowering in the Anza Borrego desert.

The reason this doesn't happen every year is because it takes about ten years for all the right factors to come together. Unfortunately, climate change has also affected the frequency of superblooms. It led to extreme weather conditions. Prolonged droughts are followed by heavy rainfall that falls within a week, destroying growing future flowers or completely washing away seeds. Floral tourism has also reduced the likelihood of wildflowers blooming because of its impact on erosion—delicate flowers are often trampled.

The best places to see super blooms are most often found in state parks. Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Mojave, Lake Elsinore, Anza Borrego and Antelope Valley are some of the best places to see this stunning flower spectacle.
