Cinemas will open soon in California: but with major changes to the rules for visiting

Movie theaters in California can reopen on Friday, June 12, in counties that have met the state's coronavirus pandemic criteria - with the exception of most of the Bay Area. Writes about this SFChronicle.

On Monday, June 8, the health department published guidelines for opening cinemas, including the requirement that cinemas limit displays to 25% capacity or a maximum of 100 visitors, whichever is less.

The manual instructs cinemas to set up reservation systems so that customers sit staggered, have separate entry and exit points where possible, and seats are set so that viewers can sit 6 feet (1,8 m) apart from friend.

The department also recommends using disposable seat covers and requiring face masks if visitors do not eat or drink.

The new rules for cinemas follow similar rules issued for hotels, gyms, bars, campsites, museums and other public places where a lot of people gather.

Districts that have confirmed that they meet certain conditions, such as a stable hospitalization rate for patients with coronavirus, can resume providing these services starting Friday, June 12th.

All but seven districts are ready to move on to the next stage of the opening, including Napa, Solano and Sonoma. But whether they will do it will decide the local representatives of the Department of Health.

Six Bay Area counties—San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Mateo and Santa Clara—plan to emerge from lockdowns at a slower pace. They have not yet determined the timing of the opening of cinemas.
