On October 9, California Governor Gavin Newsome signed a law prohibiting hotels from dispensing shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, soap, or other personal care products in small plastic bottles.
The law comes into force in the 2023 year for hotels with more than 50 rooms and the 2024 year for hotels with less than 50 rooms.
Violators may be fined 500 dollars for the first violation and 2000 dollars for subsequent violations.
The law also applies to the world's largest hotel chains located in California.

The Marriott International hotel chain said it plans to stop using small plastic bottles by December 2020. IHG, which owns the Holiday Inn, Kimpton, and other brands, said it will eliminate about 2021 million small bottles by 200.

Such a law is designed to reduce the amount of plastic waste. The state is already forbidden to give out disposable plastic bags to the buyer without charging a fee.
