In California, about 30 children ended up in the hospital after visiting a dentist

In California, nearly a dozen 3 children who have had pulpotomy have suffered from a dangerous bacterial infection. When performing a pulpotomy, dentists remove the infected pulp inside the milk tooth so that the rest of the tooth can be saved from being removed.

The infection was caused Mycobacterium abscessus, which entered the children's body with water at the Children's Dental Group in the city of Anaheim in patients aged from 3 to 9 years from March to July. Presumably, the bacteria develop in the tube through which water enters the children's body.

Doctors are very concerned about the development of infection, since it is very difficult to treat with antibiotics. Often the affected tissue is removed surgically. “Treatment can be very traumatic and deforming,” said Dr. Eric Handler. The infection develops very slowly and symptoms may take several weeks or months to be noticed.

The California Dental Council is investigating whether all the proper procedures have been performed at the Children's Dental Group office in Anaheim. The company owns other offices in California, but none of them are associated with this outbreak.

“We want to make sure they did what they were supposed to do,” said dental board spokeswoman Julia Emrad.
