In California, an illegal drowned, trying to cross the border during a storm

Last Wednesday, a migrant illegally tried to cross the border between the United States and Mexico by water and drowned during a storm in the All-American Canal in California, authorities say.

Three unknown migrants from El Salvador were seen in an attempt to illegally swim across the border about three kilometers west of Calexico around 21: 00 last Wednesday, the press service of the US Customs and Border Service reported, writes Fox News.

Border Patrol agents arrested two people after they swam across the All American Canal. A third man struggled to stay afloat in the nearly 130-kilometre-long aqueduct and drowned as there was a storm and heavy rain in the area.

“Agents were unable to come to the aid of the man before he drowned,” the Border Patrol said. “Border Patrol Search and Rescue quickly arrived on scene and officers attempted to remove the man's body from the water but were forced to abort the operation due to heavy rain and poor visibility.”

Rescuers got the body of the deceased out of the water at about 10 on Thursday morning.

The authorities did not name the nationality and personality of the man.

“This incident tragically illustrates how human smuggling organizations place migrants in dangerous situations,” Chief Patrol Agent Gloria Chavez said in a department news release. “The man trusted the smugglers, and it cost him his life.”

It is unclear whether these three were part of a migrant caravan along the California border. In recent months, thousands of people, many from Central America, have crossed Mexico in hopes of illegally entering the United States or applying for asylum.

In late November, one of the immigrant women was pierced through with reinforcement when a woman climbed a part of the border fence, planning to illegally enter the US.
