In California, ICE Arrested 125 Illegal Immigrants In Week Despite State-Asylum Policy
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the end of the operation that resulted in the detention of more than 125 foreigners in the state of California, which has an asylum policy that largely prohibits law enforcement cooperation in the detention of foreigners - criminals. This is reported on the official website ICE.
Operation ICE, which ran from September 28 to October 2, targeted expulsion foreigners who were arrested for crimes but released by state or local law enforcement. More than 95% of these foreigners had a criminal record or their criminal cases were pending at the time of arrest.
“Unfortunately, some local officials, including many in California, continue to put politics above public safety. Instead of fulfilling our shared mission to protect communities, they would rather play with the law by enforcing so-called sanctuary city policies at the expense of our nation's security,” said Acting Secretary of State Chad Wolf. “Operation Rise is proof that we will never give up on the rule of law, with or without the participation of local politicians.”
“Part of ICE’s mission is to protect the American people and keep our communities safe. We achieve this when we are partners, not adversaries, on the ground. These partnerships allow ICE to secure dangerous criminal aliens before they are released into communities, thereby reducing the potential for recidivism,” said Tony Pham, senior officer acting as ICE Director. “Unfortunately, California’s sanctuary laws protect and shield criminal aliens by harboring them in our communities where they can potentially reoffend.”

In the course of these recent enforcement actions, ICE California staff identified, pursued and arrested many foreign criminal offenders who had previously been released from local and state law enforcement custody.
In the Los Angeles area alone, officers arrested nearly 100 unlawfully present individuals—with criminal histories including murder, sexual assault, sex crimes involving children, assault, robbery, domestic violence and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Nationally, approximately 86% of administrative arrests in fiscal year 2019 were of aliens with criminal convictions or pending criminal charges. In FY 2019, ICE arrested individuals with more than 1900 convictions and charges of murder, 1800 of kidnapping, 12 of sex crimes, 000 of sexual assault, 5000 of assault, 45 of in drug crimes, 000 in gun crimes and 67 in driving under the influence of a substance.
ICE notes that all persons who violate immigration laws can be arrested, detained and expelled from the country if this can be done by law. ICE takes many factors into account when targeting and arresting people, including their criminal and immigration background.

Asylum policy restricts most forms of cooperation with federal immigration authorities and significantly limits ICE's ability to work with partner agencies, ICE officials said. ICE argues that working with local law enforcement is essential to safeguarding public safety, and the agency is committed to working with local jurisdictions to ensure that foreign criminals are not released into US communities to commit new crimes.
