In California, ICE agents arrested an illegal who was taking his wife to the maternity hospital.

Husband Maria del Carmen Venegi, 36-year-old Joel Arron-Daru, was arrested when he took his wife to the hospital for a planned cesarean section. He was arrested at a gas station in San Bernardino, California, writes The Guardian.

On the recordings from surveillance cameras that were made available to several media outlets, one can see how two cars drove up to the family van when they stopped at a gas station. ICE agents asked for IDs. Venega showed, and her husband Arron announced that he had forgotten his ID at home. After that, he was handcuffed and taken away. The woman was left alone at the gas station.

She had to get to the hospital where she gave birth to a son. This is the fifth child in their family. The oldest of the couple’s children is 13 years old.

Venega said that she and her husband arrived in the US 12 years ago from the city of Leon, located in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. They do not have official permission to live in the United States, but all five children are US citizens. According to her, the husband was the sole breadwinner of the family.

ICE spokeswoman Laurie Halay said that Arron is a Mexican citizen and illegally resides in the United States. He is now in custody pending the expulsion procedure.

A spokeswoman later said that Arron "came under ICE's close attention after a warrant was issued for his arrest in Mexico on a murder charge."

“Anyone who violates immigration laws may be subject to arrest, detention, and deportation from the United States,” the statement said.

It is noted that during the first 14 months of work of the Donald Trump administration, ICE agents arrested for 203% more illegal migrants who did not have a criminal past than during the same period before Trump came to power.

Venegia's lawyer, Emilio Amaya Garmia, said that Arron is not the person who was wanted by ICE agents.

“The lives of mother and child were put at risk. “This demonstrates the lack of common sense in a ‘zero tolerance’ policy that does not take into account human needs,” says the lawyer.

Garmia will file a motion with the immigration court to hold a hearing on the release of Arron on bail and cancel proceedings for his deportation.
