In California, 11-year-old girl died because of allergy to toothpaste

11-year-old Denise Saldate from West Covina, California, died as a result of an allergic reaction to toothpaste. The girl was allergic to dairy products, but the family had no idea that the dentifrice might contain milk protein, which would kill the child.

“I feel like I let her down,” says the girl’s disconsolate mother. The toothpaste the child used was recommended by the dentist, writes People.

The Denise family has always been very attentive to the labels, seeking to ensure that the products do not contain milk protein. Just checking each product, it was given to the girl. The dentist advised to use MI Paste One medicinal paste to strengthen tooth enamel. Even without suspecting that the paste may contain dairy ingredients, the family was shocked when Denise suffered anaphylactic shock while brushing his teeth on 4 in April.

According to the mother, the girl managed to say: “I think I’m allergic to toothpaste,” and by that time her lips had already turned blue. The mother put Denise on the bed, told her to call 911 and ran for an EpiPen (a special pen-syringe with epinephrine, which relieves some types of allergic reactions - ForumDaily's note).

“She said she couldn’t breathe, and I kept saying, ‘You can, I love you,’” said Monique, the girl’s mother.

The woman made the child cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but the child’s entire mouth was filled with toothpaste and oxygen did not enter the respiratory tract. Denise died two days later.

As it turned out, medicinal toothpaste contains recaldent, a substance obtained from cow's milk protein.

“I didn’t check the ingredients in the paste,” Monique says. “Contrary to what everyone tells me, I feel like I let her down!”

The product contains at least two warnings on the label notifying users of the milk component. Now the mother of the deceased urges parents to always read information about the ingredients, no matter how harmless the product may seem.

“Read everything. Don't get complacent just because you've been coping for a few years, says Monique. - There is no need to be embarrassed or afraid to ask. Make sure the ingredients are allowed. Be your child's advocate."

The family created a page on GoFundMe to cover the cost of the funeral.

“Denise Alina Saldate was a loving daughter, sister, cousin, niece and friend and an amazing person. She could light up a room and make you smile even when you were sleeping,” the page says.

“Despite struggling with allergies, she always remained so happy. She walked through life like a champion and always remained on the bright side. She wanted to change the world and we knew that one day she would change the world,” the family wrote.
