Data on the number of medical malpractice cases in all 50 states from 1990 to 2023 showed that the northeastern states are the most likely to misdiagnose or mistreat patients.

The researchers found that New York ranked first with nearly 65 medical malpractice cases among 000 physicians. Pennsylvania and New Jersey came in second and third. Alabama, meanwhile, was ranked the safest state, with an average of just 51 medical malpractice reports per practitioner.

States where medical errors occur more often

New York topped the list as the state with the highest rate of medical malpractice. There have been 1990 reported medical malpractice settlements in the state since 64, according to the report.
