Israel renamed settlement in the Golan Heights in honor of Trump

The name “Trump” can be seen in the names of high-rise hotels, office skyscrapers and golf clubs. Now it is also present in the name of a tiny Jewish settlement in the Golan Heights.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman on Sunday took part in the official renaming ceremony of the Brukim settlement into Trump Heights.

“This is just great,” said Friedman. “It’s hard to imagine a more suitable and wonderful birthday present.”

Trump, who turned 73 on Friday, tweeted: “I thank Prime Minister Netanyahu and the State of Israel for this great honor.”

About 10 people live in a small settlement. The Cabinet of Israel renamed it in gratitude to Trump for recognition the sovereignty of Israel over the Golan Heights.

The Golan Heights before 1967, were part of Syria. During the Six Day War, Israeli troops occupied this territory. Israel introduced its administration and laws in the Golan Heights in 1981, but other governments did not recognize this act.

Syria is constantly seeking to restore sovereignty over the region. For decades, the UN peacekeeping mission periodically took place on the plateau, which was folded and resumed several times.

“The Golan Heights have been and will always be an integral part of our country,” said Netanyahu on Sunday.

Israeli officials hope that the renaming of the settlement to Trump Heights will lead to the development of the situation in the Golan Heights.

However, opposition lawmaker Zvi Hauser called renaming the settlement in honor of Trump a cheap public relations stunt. “So far there is no funding, no planning, no settlement,” he said.
