In Illinois, after a week of searching for the missing child was found dead, parents are suspected of his death

Allegations of the murder of a child put forward to his parents, writes CNN.

Crystal Lake Chief of Police Jim Black stated that suspicions about Andrew Freund's parents are based on information obtained after analyzing data from their mobile phones.

The boy's parents, Andrew Freund, Sr. and Joanne Cunningham, during interrogation, provided information that ultimately led to the discovery of the child’s body in Woodstock, Illinois, about 10 miles (16 km) from their home in Crystal Lake.

According to Black, they were both charged with first-degree murder, domestic violence, and also not reporting the disappearance or death of the child. According to police, Freind was also charged with concealing the murder.

The cause of the boy’s death is currently unknown.

The search of the couple’s home began on the morning of April 18 when Andrew’s father called the police and reported that the child was missing.

“We have a missing child. We woke up this morning and he was gone, he was gone,” he told the 911 dispatcher.

Freund also told the dispatcher that he put his son to sleep in his pajamas on Wednesday night, but could not find him in the morning before school.

“I had a doctor's appointment this morning, and when I got back from the doctor, I stopped by to say good morning and he wasn't there,” the father told the dispatcher.

He added that he searched the entire house and looked around, but could not find the boy.

15 police officers, drones and dogs were involved in the search. But the police concluded that, most likely, the child did not run away and was not kidnapped, and concentrated the investigation inside the family.

“The dogs detected Andrew's scent inside the residence, indicating that Andrew had not left the residence,” police said, adding that there were no signs of abduction.

In addition, the police said that the boy’s mother did not cooperate with the law enforcement officers during the search for the child.

Child Welfare Investigations

On April 23, the police released a report consisting of 63 pages, detailing several police calls to Andrew in recent years. For example, in December 2018, the officer described the unacceptable conditions in the house, where the floor was “dog feces and urine”.

After the visit, the officer also reported a suspicious injury to one of the children, but the child welfare officer did not reveal any abuses on the part of the parents. Then the parents said that the injury occurred because of the dog.

Months earlier, a local resident called the police to check the condition of the children, because there was no electricity in the house for several weeks. The officer wrote in the report after this visit that the two children look “healthy and happy,” and that the child protection authorities stated that the lack of electricity is not a reason to investigate.

A spokesman for the Illinois Children's and Family Affairs Department said the agency had “had contact with the family” since Andrew was born. The boy "was taken care of" shortly after his birth, when "neglect on the part of the mother was noticed." According to him, from 2013 to 2015, the baby was under the care of another person.

In 2018, the department conducted twice investigations on negligence and abuse of children in the family. In both cases, the charges were declared unfounded.

The younger brother of the deceased, who until this week was in this house, now lives in another family.
