In Illinois, Immigrants Hold Freedom March Demanding Changes to Green Card Issues
On the day most Americans celebrated US Independence Day, many immigrants in Springfield, Illinois staged a Freedom March and asked for a green card. Writes about this NewsChannel20.
On Saturday, July 4, immigrants organized a Freedom March, the main goal of which was to encourage Senator Dick Durbin to help pass a bill that would make employment-based green cards a first-come, first-out system.
The Immigration Voice organization shared its opinion on why the Justice Act for Highly Qualified Immigrants should be adopted in order to remove the current 7% limit for each country on work visas.
“We are not outside of this country, we are people who have been living in this country with our families for decades, and the only reason we are not Americans yet is because there are these discriminatory government visa restrictions for employment to work,” said a representative of the organization.

Seventeen-year-old Sruti Singaraju says immigrants, like her, live in uncertainty because of the long wait for a work visa, which can take decades, and the potential for being sent home after she leaves her parents' house.
“I can call this country my home, but in the eyes of all the people who look at my documents and almost all official organizations, I am actually separated from this country, even if I am in it, and that is really sad and a little scary,” Sruthi said to Singaraju.
Senator Dick Derbin's latest public statement on the Highly Qualified Immigrants Act was in December 2019 when he spoke to Congress about the needs of immigrant families.
“Don't believe we can do it at this very moment, but we hope to do it very quickly. The reason is obvious - these families are truly experiencing difficulties and problems that no family should have to face. And the sooner we solve them, the better,” said Dick Durbin.
At the moment, the Law on Highly Qualified Immigrants has already been passed by the House of Representatives, but not by the Senate.
