Three teenagers were electrocuted in the fountain of Vake Park in the center of Tbilisi (the capital of Georgia). As a result, a 13-year-old girl died, and the boys who were with her were saved. Writes about it with the BBC.

The children were injured when they tried to get the ball that had fallen into the fountain. This fountain solemnly opened the day before after many months and costly repairs.

The incident has already provoked a sharp public reaction, including calls for the resignation of Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.

The tragedy happened on October 13th. The children were playing with a ball and dropped it into the fountain. When they tried to take him out of the water, they were electrocuted.

Two teenagers could be saved only by a lucky chance, the witness says.

“As I was passing by, suddenly there were screams. Some children were lying in the water, others were calling for help. A man jumped in to pull them out. First he took out one child, then another. The children cried that there was a third one. This man could no longer enter - as many times as he entered, he was severely shocked. When the fountains were finally turned off, the third child was found. The girl no longer showed signs of life,” recalls the eyewitness.

The victims were in critical condition. One of them was hooked up to a ventilator. Their condition stabilized only the next day, and the children came into contact with their parents. One was even released.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, a criminal case was initiated under the article on violation of safety rules during mining, construction or other work.

The case caused a significant resonance in the country.

Without waiting for the results of the investigation, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze promised to severely punish those responsible.

“This is a very serious incident, we are shocked. As for the investigation, it has begun and all relevant authorities have been involved. It is obvious that the perpetrators will be punished,” Kaladze said.

The mayor, the day before the tragedy, on October 12, together with the head of the city assembly, solemnly opened the fountain, inviting the townspeople to visit the resting place.

“We have the opportunity to present to the public the restored small cascade and round fountain, come and enjoy,” Kaladze said then.

The opposition believes that the mayor of the capital should take responsibility and resign. Nika Melia, the leader of the United National Movement, made a statement on this issue to the media.

“I would resign if I were the mayor; I would not have the moral strength to continue to hold this position,” the politician emphasized. - The reason for all this is corruption, it is like a time bomb in any environment, in every seemingly safe place, it kills. Kaladze must understand that taking on political responsibility is a burden. It’s impossible to wipe your hands on an ordinary project performer.”

In total, the Vake Park renovation project, including landscaping and infrastructure works, cost $11,9 million. The work was carried out by a company that won a number of tenders announced by the Tbilisi City Hall at once.
