Georgia declares state of emergency after sharp increase in violence amid protests
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp imposed a state of emergency on the state and deployed up to 1000 National Guard troops in connection with aggressive protests in Atlanta. Writes about it "Voice of America".
Republican Kemp said he signed the decree after "several weeks of sharp increase in violent crime and destruction of property in Atlanta."
The governor’s statement said that more than 30 state residents received gunshot wounds during a long weekend in honor of Independence Day, five people died.
Among the dead is an eight-year-old girl who was shot dead while she was driving in a car with her mother and another man.
Secoria Turner was killed on Saturday, July 4, in the evening, when a car tried to enter a parking lot where illegal fences were installed, police said.
The shooting occurred near the site where Atlanta subsequently fired a policeman shot and killed Rayshaw Brooks after he got into a fight with the police and tried to escape with a stolen stun gun.
“Over 75 shootings have occurred in the city over the past few weeks,” said Mayor Keisha Lance-Bottoms, commenting on the death of an eight-year-old girl. “You can't blame the Atlanta Police Department for this.”
The mayor made an emotional appeal to end the violence.

“We shoot at each other on our streets in this city. “You shot the child,” Bottoms said. “We do each other more harm than any policeman in this unit.”
Following the death of George Floyd, protests took place in central Atlanta in late May, some of which were accompanied by robberies and vandalism.
“Peaceful protests were intercepted by criminals with a dangerous, destructive agenda. Now the target is the innocent residents of Georgia, they are shot and left to die, ”Kemp said. “We need to stop this lawlessness and restore order in our capital.”
“Enough tough rhetoric. We must protect the lives and livelihoods of all residents of Georgia, ”he added.
National Guard units will be sent to the State Capitol, the Georgia Department of Public Security, and the governor's residence.
