In Georgia, dogs are trained to call a doctor for the owner

The Georgia Institute of Technology operates a laboratory for the interaction of animals and computers, in which dogs are trained to call the 911 service in case of an emergency.

Scientists are testing several options for technological solutions that will help dogs call for help for their owners: from high-tech dog vests to a pet-friendly touch screen that works like a telephone, writes CNN.

At the moment, the laboratory has completed testing the touch screen, with which dogs can call or send text messages.

Dogs can be trained to activate this device if their owner has fallen, or after receiving an agreed verbal signal from him to call for help.

The dog may come up to the touch screen and nose over a series of icons, which will lead to a call to the 911 service, giving it the location of the device.

According to the creators of the project, both pets and service dogs can be easily trained to use technology to call for help. Scientists and trainers say that similar tasks have been set before animals, but their implementation was much more difficult than simply clicking on a few icons. Now scientists have simplified this task.

The touch screen can be programmed to call anyone, such as a family member, doctor, or 911. The buttons on the touch screen are blue and yellow because a dog's vision is somewhat similar to that of a person with red-green color blindness. There are only 3 buttons on the screen to eliminate the possibility that the animal will make any accidental calls.

Researchers have also developed vests that dogs can use to communicate with people. The vests are equipped with either a chew toy that the dog can bite on command, or a braided rope that the animal can pull on command. Both actions activate a special sensor in a toy or rope.

After activation, these sensors signal the computer at the back of the vest to make a phone call, send text, or send an audio message. An automatic sound message sent through the speaker on the vest may allow passersby to know that the dog has called for help or that the owner of the dog needs additional help.

For example, some dogs, in particular those serving epileptics, are trained to recognize the onset of a seizure, in which case they push the wearer to the wall and support them during a fall. Now, these dogs using the sensor can call for help or activate a voice message informing passersby that the dog's owner has started an attack.

With such messages, according to the developers, the level of communication between animals and people will improve, and in this case, even a person who does not understand anything in dog training will understand that the dog asks for help to its owner or to call for help.
