In Georgia, lightning killed 15-year-old girl while swimming

On Sunday, June 13, authorities said a 15-year-old girl was killed after being struck by lightning while swimming in the waters surrounding Tybee Island, Georgia.
Officers responded to a report about a girl who may have been struck by lightning in the ocean near 17th Street shortly after 14:30 pm on Saturday, June 12, Tybee Island Police Department reported.
The police said that after the emergency services performed artificial respiration, the girl was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.
Authorities said her family told investigators that the girl came to Tybee Island from Alabama.

“The men and women of Tybee Island are deeply saddened by the loss of this young girl, and our hearts remain with her family and friends,” Tybee police said in a statement.
Although rare, lightning is the leading cause of storm-related deaths in the United States, according to the National Weather Service. Lightning strikes kill an average of 49 people each year across the country, including hundreds of injuries.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the chance of being struck by lightning is one in 500.
