In the White House, the COVID-19 pandemic was compared to the Chernobyl explosion

On May 24, a senior White House official compared China’s actions regarding the outbreak of coronavirus with how the Soviet Union tried to hide the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986, writes Reuters.

National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien said Beijing knew what was happening with the Wuhan virus in November, but lied to the World Health Organization and prevented external experts from accessing information.

"They released a virus into the world that wiped out trillions of dollars in the American economy that we have to spend to keep the country and Americans afloat during the pandemic," O'Brien told NBC.

“Concealing information about the virus will go down in history along with Chernobyl. We'll see an HBO special in 10 or 15 years," he added, referring to the TV miniseries.

As a result of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the former Ukrainian Soviet Republic, a large-scale leak of radioactive nuclear material occurred, which killed tens of people in several weeks and forced tens of thousands to flee. Moscow for some time did not reveal the scale of the worst nuclear disaster in history.

U.S. President Donald Trump regularly criticizes how China deals with the outbreak of coronavirus.

China denied the allegations, and on May 24, its chief diplomat accused the United States of spreading lies and attacking the country.

“This is a real problem, and it has cost many, many thousands of lives in America and around the world because real information was not released,” O'Brien said. - It was a cover-up. And eventually we'll get to the bottom of it."
