Gas explodes at barbeque restaurant, killing 31

On Wednesday, June 21, at least 31 people died and seven were injured in a gas explosion at a barbecue restaurant. The tragedy occurred in the Chinese city of Yinchuan in the northwest of the Ningxia region. The edition told in more detail CNN.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, the explosion was caused by a leak from an LPG tank inside the restaurant. This happened around 20:40.

Among the seven injured, one person is still in critical condition. The remaining six received minor injuries, burns and glass cuts.

Fire services dispatched 20 vehicles and more than 100 people to the scene, and search and rescue operations continued until 04:00 on June 22.

Photos released by Chinese media show a damaged building with a blackened façade, debris on the ground and smoke in the air. You can see how firefighters climb the stairs to the second floor and pull people out on stretchers.

Interviews with police and firefighters at the scene showed that two restaurant employees smelled the gas about an hour before the explosion.

According to the statement, two employees found that the gas tank valve was broken and sent another employee to get a new valve. During his replacement, an explosion occurred.

Police detained nine people and froze their assets, including the restaurant manager, employees and shareholders.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping called the incident "heartbreaking" and said it was "a good lesson."

Xi Jinping said that it is necessary to help the injured and comfort the families of the victims, as well as to find out the cause of the accident as soon as possible. He, among other things, instructed the relevant government authorities to conduct security risk audits and strengthen security oversight in key sectors.

The incident happened shortly before the three-day national state celebration (22-24 June) dedicated to the Dragon Boat Festival began in China.
