Austrian supermarket closed after spider bite causes long-lasting and painful erections

A supermarket in Austria has closed after a venomous Brazilian wandering spider was spotted among bananas. The bite of a deadly insect can cause a long and painful erection. The edition told in more detail New York Post.

The Penny Market in Krems an der Donau, which is about 45 minutes west of Vienna, the country's capital, has been reported to be closed as of Tuesday 8 August.

The store manager called the fire department after spotting a 4-inch (10,1 cm) black and red spider. Rescuers sealed the banana crates at the store, but the spider is still on the loose.

The venom of the Brazilian wandering spider "stimulates" an erection that lasts for hours. Those bitten by the spider may suffer from high blood pressure and pain throughout the body.

“Erection is a side effect that everyone who gets stung by this spider experiences, along with pain and discomfort,” said Dr. Romulo Leite of the Medical College of Georgia, who has studied the insect. “We hope that this will ultimately lead to the development of drugs to treat erectile dysfunction.”

In 2012, Smithsonian Magazine suggested that the spider could work as a new Viagra to help men with erectile dysfunction. But so far it does not seem that this idea has any basis.

This is not the first time this species of venomous spider has wandered into Europe.

According to the BBC, in May 2017 "hundreds" of spiders infiltrated bananas at an Asda supermarket in the UK that the family had purchased. The spiders forced her to evacuate the house.

“Perhaps I have never had a greater shock reaction before. I was dumbfounded to find it,” admitted Craig Harrison Caters, because, according to him, it “scared me to death.”
