Alabama teacher of the year committed suicide after being accused of having sex with schoolchildren

Leslie Buttram Gillespie is indicted on separate counts of second-degree rape and second-degree sodomy, as well as two counts of being a school employee who had sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19.
Gillespie worked at RA Hubbard High School in North Courtland. In 2019, the school recognized her as Teacher of the Year. In addition, she has compiled several methods of teaching English.
Online records confirm that Gillespie was released on Thursday, May 27 after posting a $ 60 bond.

On Saturday morning, May 29, police arrived at the home of an English teacher in Hillsborough, where they found her body. Officials say she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to the police, the woman could not withstand the harassment launched against her on social networks and committed suicide.
The schoolboy told investigators that he and another student had sex with Gillespie in her class after school back in September 2020.
The students were 15 and 16 years old at the time of the alleged sexual assault.

Lawrence County Schools Superintendent John Bret Smith sent home a statement to parents after the teacher's arrest, which said the district would conduct its own investigation into Gillespie's alleged behavior.
“While the district is unable to provide any specific details at this time, we want to emphasize that nothing is more important to Lawrence County Schools than the safety and well-being of our students,” the statement said. “We will try and quickly work to resolve the situation.”
