In Iowa, passed the toughest law against abortion in the US

Iowa state parliamentarians endorsed a bill prohibiting an abortion as soon as the fetal heartbeat was detected.

According to lawyers and human rights activists, this is the toughest law against abortion in the United States, writes with the BBC.

The document has been submitted for signature by the state governor, and if it enters into force, abortions after six weeks gestation will be prohibited in the region.

Women's rights groups claim that, until this time, many women do not even know that they are pregnant, and such a ban effectively deprives them of their right to an abortion.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, who belongs to the Republican anti-abortion party, has not yet said whether he will sign the bill.

In 2017, abortions were prohibited in Iowa after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

What new restrictions have been approved

The adopted bill requires that any woman who wants to have an abortion undergo an ultrasound scan to check for the fetal heartbeat. If it is found, she will be denied the procedure.

The document provides for several exceptions: the term of an abortion is not limited to the moment of the fetal heartbeat, if the child was conceived as a result of rape, incest, or if abortion is necessary to save the woman’s life.

Planned Parenthood criticized the bill, saying the ban "contradicts both medical and legal standards, as well as the common sense and public opinion of Iowans."

Critics of the law point out that such a law would deprive women of the legal right to an abortion, which increases the risk of conducting such procedures in secret with the risk to the health and life of a woman.

Representatives of the State Democratic Party of America say that the decision is illegal because it violates the US Supreme Court ruling on human rights, which legalized the abortion in 1973. They suggest that the law will be successfully challenged in court if the state governor still signs him.

But some Republicans say that the purpose of making such tough bans on abortions is precisely the desire of judicial reviews of these decisions, which may be able to cancel or change the precedent set in the 1973 year.

US President Donald Trump also opposes abortion and calls their restriction a priority for the Republican party.
