US airports will be allowed to carry liquids and laptops in hand luggage
Passengers may be allowed to leave liquids and laptops in carry-on baggage at checkpoints at United States airports if the new scanning technology they are currently testing is implemented and widely distributed.
The US Transportation Security Administration on Monday announced plans to test computed tomography (CT) scanners for hand luggage. It is expected that by the end of 2018, about 40 units of such equipment will be installed at US airports, writes CNN.
X-ray scanning equipment creates three-dimensional images that can be analyzed in three projections for the presence of explosives and other threats. CT technology is similar to the technology used for medical imaging. Modern scanning machines for hand luggage generate images in two projections.
“The use of CT technology significantly improves threat detection capabilities at a security checkpoint,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement.
Testing of computed tomography for airports began in 2017 at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix and at Logan International Airport in Boston. John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York also received a scanner. Heathrow London is among the international airports testing 3D technology.
The first 15 units will be installed over the next few months at such US airports:
- Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI)
- Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)
- Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG)
- Houston Hobby Airport (HOU)
- Indianapolis International Airport (IND)
- John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
- McCarran International Airport (LAS)
- Oakland International Airport (OAK)
- Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)
- Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
- San Diego International Airport (SAN)
- St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL)
- Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD)
