In 2018, the death toll in air crashes rose sharply

Last year, the death toll from aircraft crashes rose sharply compared with the 2017 year, while the 2018 year still remains one of the safest in terms of air travel in the entire history of observations.

The worst accident last year occurred in October, when a Lion Air plane crashed in Indonesia, killing 189 people as a result of the incident.

2017 turned out to be the safest year in the history of commercial air travel, with 10 fatal accidents recorded, including five cargo plane crashes and five passenger plane crashes, killing 44 people on board in total.

These statistics do not include disasters involving military and non-commercial aircraft, as well as people killed on the ground. If we take them into account, the numbers will be sadder - 24 plane crashes, 230 dead.

In 2018, there were a total of 15 fatal accidents in commercial aviation—12 passenger planes and three cargo planes crashed, killing 3 people. Taking into account the crashes of military transport aircraft, the number of disasters is 556, the number of deaths is 25.

The biggest 2018 disasters of the year:

• October 29 - A Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX crashes into the Java Sea after taking off from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board. According to the preliminary conclusions of the commission, due to its technical condition, the aircraft should not have taken off and should have been taken out of service.
• May 18 - A Cubana de Aviacion Boeing 737-201 crashes near Havana, killing 112 people. The cause of the disaster is said to be human factor.
• February 11 - An-148 of Saratov Airlines crashed in the Moscow region, killing 71 people. The cause of the disaster, according to the commission, was crew error.
• February 18 - Iran Aseman Airlines ATR-72-212 crashes in the Zagros Mountains in Iran. 66 dead. The exact cause of the crash has not been established; there have been versions of both a crew error in difficult weather conditions and a failure of navigation equipment.
• 12 March Bombardier Dash Q-12 plane crashed near Kathmandu 400 airport in March; 51 people died. The cause of the crash is a technical failure.

According to 2018 statistics from the Aviation Safety Network (ASN), only one in 2 flights resulted in a fatal incident. In 520, this figure was better: one disaster per 000 flights.

However, as stated in the organization, the situation in the field of aviation security has recently improved significantly.

“If the number of accidents had remained the same as 10 years ago, there would have been 39 fatal accidents last year. And if at the level of 2000, then 64. This is significant progress in terms of aviation safety over the past two decades,” said ASN CEO Harro Ranter.

According to ASN, most often the tragic accidents occur because of the loss of control over the aircraft. At least 10 from 25 major disasters over the past five years are associated with loss of control or control by pilots, say the organization.
