Leaked Tesla documents: thousands of electric vehicles with autopilots do not work properly and provoke accidents

A Tesla whistleblower handed over 100GB of data containing thousands of customer complaints about the safety of Tesla's Autonomous Driving System (FSD) features to German publication Handelsblatt. TheVerge.

The data contains reports of more than 2400 acceleration problems and more than 1500 braking problems.

Complaints reported in the US, Europe and Asia cover the period from 2015 to March 2022. According to Handelsblatt, during this period, Tesla customers reported more than 2400 self-acceleration problems and 1500 braking problems, including 139 reports of "unintentional emergency braking" and 383 reports of "phantom stops" due to false collision warnings.

Some of the incidents cited by Handelsblatt include a description of cars "suddenly braking or accelerating violently". While some drivers have safely gained control of their vehicle, Handelsblatt says others "ended up in a ditch, hit walls, or slammed into oncoming vehicles."

Non-Disclosure Policy

The documents obtained by the publication also set out Tesla's policy in responding to problems faced by customers. It is assumed that Tesla likes to keep data about its cars under wraps.

Here are some company policy rules:

For each incident there are items for "technical review". Employees who enter this feedback into the system regularly make it clear that the report is “for internal use only”. Each entry also contains a note in bold stating that the information, if it can be communicated at all, can only be communicated to the client "ORAL".

"Do not copy or paste the report below into an email, text message, or leave it in a customer's voicemail," the message reads. Vehicle details should also not be released without permission. If “the involvement of a lawyer cannot be prevented”, this must be recorded.

According to a note by Handelsblatt editor-in-chief Sebastian Matthes, the editors of the publication sent Tesla several questions about the data received. According to Matthes, instead of responding to them, Tesla “demanded to delete data and talked about data theft.” Matthes notes that the publication received information from "several informants."

This is far from the first time concerns have been raised about Tesla's FSD. Possibilities Tesla FSD include all the features that come with Tesla Autopilot and Advanced Autopilot features: automatic lane change, automatic steering, automatic parking and more. Despite all the misgivings, Tesla made its FSD beta available to everyone last November.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began looking into Tesla's FSD software in January after Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that the company would give users the option to turn off "steering wheel control." Approximately one month later, the agency considered the possibility of a crash hazard, causing Tesla to recall 362 FSD-equipped vehicles and suspend FSD installation.
