Strengthening the fleet and Javelin missiles: in 2020 Ukraine will receive $ 698 million of military assistance from the United States

In 2020, Ukraine will receive assistance from the United States in the amount of $698 million: defense assistance for $250 million and financial and economic assistance for $448 million. Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Vladimir Yelchenko said this during a conversation with reporters, writes "Voice of America".

At the same time, military assistance, if Ukraine fulfills certain conditions for reforming the Ukrainian armed forces and bringing them to NATO standards, as well as using the first part of the amount, can be increased to $ 300 million.

The priority of cooperation between the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the Pentagon in 2020 was to strengthen the fleet, the ambassador said. In the same year, it is planned to transfer three Island class boats to Ukraine, each of which will have equipment and weapons worth $ 10 million. This is in addition to two boats of the same class that have already arrived in Ukraine.

“There is such a term as “mosquito fleet,” that is, high-speed boats, which our military and sailors really lack in the Black and Azov Seas,” Yelchenko said.

In addition, for the first time, Ukraine will directly purchase from the Pentagon Javelin missile systems for $ 36,5 million. This amount, the ambassador stressed, is not included in the total amount of US military assistance to Ukraine.

“They are not included in the amount of US assistance, but this is important because this is the first time this kind of contact is made directly with the Pentagon. It opens the way for us to implement other projects that are currently being negotiated,” he said.

Also, the United States will continue the program of military exercises at the Yavoriv training ground in the Lviv region. In total, the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States said that since 2014, the United States has provided Ukraine with $ 1,6 billion in assistance to strengthen security and defense, which is 92% of all foreign military-technical assistance for this period.
