USCIS offers special immigration services to victims of Hurricane Harvey
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offers special immigration services that can help people affected by unforeseen circumstances, in particular from Hurricane Harvey.
Their list is published on the website of the department.
The following services are offered:
- Change in status or extension of stay for persons currently in the United States on non-immigrant visas. The applicant may be released from liability for failure to comply with the deadlines for filing an application for the extension or change of non-immigration status if the delay was caused by emergency circumstances independent of the applicant, including Hurricane Harvey;
- Re-entry for persons with an uncertain status to enter the United States - Parole (a document allowing re-entry into the United States for those applicants who need to temporarily leave the country while their immigration case is pending) for persons previously who have received this permission from USCIS;
- Accelerated processing of preliminary requests for parole;
- Accelerated consideration of work permit requests for students experiencing severe economic difficulties;
- Expedited consideration of applications for work permits, if necessary;
- Revision of the terms of payment for services, in case the applicant was unable to make payment on time due to a hurricane;
- Help for those who received a request for evidence (Request for Evidence) or Notice of Intent to Deny, but could not in time for the hurricane to provide evidence or respond to a request;
- Support for those who, due to a hurricane, could not be on time for a scheduled interview at USCIS;
- Accelerated replacement of lost or damaged immigration or travel documents issued by USCIS, such as a permanent resident card (green card);
- Reassigning a meeting to remove biometric data, if the applicant was unable to attend the meeting scheduled earlier because of the hurricane.
When applying for these services, the applicant must explain how Hurricane Harvey created a need for the requested service.
