USCIS changes the design of green cards and work permits in the US

Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) change the design of the US permanent resident card (green card) and the document allowing foreign citizens to work in the States (Employment Authorization Document - EAD).

Re-design will be part of a program to strengthen controls on the implementation of immigration law and combat fraud, says department site.

The issuance of green cards for the new design will begin on 1 on May 2017.

The new document format will use improved graphic protection tools that will increase the level of protection against green card fraud.

New green cards and EAD will contain elements like this:

• photos of their holder on both sides of the document;
• unique graphic image and color palette: The green cards will show the Statue of Liberty, these documents will be executed mostly in green; on cards EAD an eagle will be depicted, the document will be executed mainly in red;

• embedded holographic images;
• documents will no longer display their holder’s signature.

In addition, green cards will no longer have an optical band on the back of the document.

Some green cards and EADissued after 1 on May 2017 of the year may still have the old design, since USCIS will continue to use the existing card stock until the current reserves of already printed cards are exhausted.

Green cards and EAD both existing and new design will be valid until the expiration date indicated on the document.

Both versions of documents are acceptable for filling out forms related to work or stay in the United States. On some old-style green cards, the expiration date is not specified, but they also remain valid.

Holders of green cards with no expiration date may consider filing an application for a replacement card for one that specifies the expiration date. Obtaining a new card reduces the likelihood of fraud or fraud in the event of a lost or stolen document.
