USCIS Updates Green Card Requirements: What's Changed
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has changed the green card application process. Now, Form I-693 (medical examination and vaccination records) must be submitted at the same time as the green card application (Form I-485). If the green card application is filed without Form I-693, USCIS may deny it. The change applies to both complete medical examinations and vaccination records, reports Boundless.
USCIS has updated its policy to make green card applications easier and faster to process. Agents will now have to submit fewer requests for additional information (RFEs) that previously required a medical examination form.
How to Apply for a Green Card After the Changes
- Make an appointment for a medical examination with a USCIS-accredited physician (civil surgeon). You can find one here here.
- Get checked and get all necessary vaccinations.
- Make sure Form I-693 is completed and signed correctly. Here all information about her has been collected.
- Submit Form I-693 in a sealed envelope along with Form I-485.

It's important:
- The requirements for medical examination have not changed. The innovations concern only the deadlines for submitting results.
- Do not open the sealed envelope containing the medical examination results.
Special cases
Certain categories of applicants may use previous medical examinations to apply for a green card:
- Refugees: The original examination that was done when you applied for asylum can be used if it did not reveal any serious problems.
- Family members of refugees: The results of the foreign examination can be used if the application is submitted within one year of its completion.
- Holders of K (fiancé/fiancée) and V visas: the inspection results are valid for one year.
