USCIS redesigned green cards and work permits

Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced the development of a new design to improve the security of the green card and work permit documents (EAD).

USCIS began issuing redesigned cards on January 30, 2023.

The new green cards and EAD contain state-of-the-art technology that continues to protect national security and improve customer service, the service said. Changes include improved detailing, tactile printing, optically enhanced inks, highly secure holographic images on the front and back of cards, a partial window layer feature on the back of the photo, and data fields appearing in different locations than in previous versions.

“This redesign further demonstrates USCIS' commitment to a proactive approach to the threat of security document falsification, forgery and fraud,” said USCIS Director Jaddou. “Continuous document updates, based on our knowledge of the latest attacker techniques and the innovation and ingenuity of our staff, ensure the continued integrity of the documents produced by our agency.”

The introduction of new designs does not mean that currently issued cards are invalid. Current cards remain valid until their expiration date unless otherwise noted.

Some green cards and EADs issued after January 30, 2023 may still display the existing design format as USCIS will continue to use the existing design until current stocks of materials are depleted. Both versions of the cards are suitable for the form I-9 "Confirmation of the right to employment", E-verify и SAVE. Some older green cards do not expire. These old green cards with no expiration date usually remain valid. However, USCIS recommends that applicants with these older cards consider filing for a replacement card to prevent fraud or counterfeiting if the card is ever lost or stolen.

USCIS released the current cards in May 2017. To reduce the risk of fraud and document forgery, the records management department updates card designs every three to five years. The card design change is part of the Secure Identification Platform (SIP) project. The SIP project started in 2019 with extensive market research.
