An American woman was charged $51 for two scoops of ice cream in Rome.

An American tourist was charged €44 ($51) for two scoops of ice cream in Rome. A Facebook post about the incident garnered nearly a million comments, including from Italians. One of them admitted he was "ashamed" for his compatriots, writes The Guardian.

Florida resident Nicole Ann advised other tourists to "steer clear of Don Nino," an ice cream parlor on the street near Piazza Navona. She said she ordered two small cups of ice cream, but was charged for two large cones with the extra toppings they use for serving—cookies, cannoli, and whipped cream. However, Nicole didn't order any of those items.

Posting a photo of her receipt from June 3rd in a Facebook group with travel tips for Rome, Anne commented: "We stopped in for gelato and asked for two small cups." The employee "gave us the smallest cups and said they had three scoops each." He then "started adding toppings we didn't ask for, like cannoli, while making it seem like it was free."

Nicole said she didn't immediately realize the bill was €44, as she "thought the employee said €14." She emphasized that the ice cream "wasn't even good," calling it the "worst" she'd tried during her 10-day stay in Rome.

Anne claims she ordered two small cones, and that's what her ice cream was served in. However, the bill listed two "maxi cones" for €12 each, €4 for whipped cream, two pistachio cannoli for €10, and two cookies for €6—a total of €44.

Don Nino's has several locations in central Rome, the main one located opposite the Spanish Steps. The company's website describes its ice cream as "the authentic taste of quality."

Nicole's post generated over 900 comments from both Italians and foreign tourists.

"As an Italian living in Italy, I'm ashamed," wrote one user.

Another commenter questioned whether she had checked the prices before ordering. In response, the tourist stated that she "didn't see prices anywhere" and, given that she had already tried a lot of ice cream during her trip, she expected it to cost about the same.

The Guardian visited the Don Nino cafe near Piazza Navona and reported that the price list was clearly visible: one scoop in a small cup or cone costs €6, and three scoops in a large cup or cone cost €12.

Typically, ice cream in Rome costs between €2 and €5, depending on the size of the serving and the location of the outlet in the city.
