US Programmers Send Their Children to Study Humanities: IT Education Is No Longer Valued

Until recently, many parents wanted their children to choose the promising and profitable IT field. In the US, the number of people who completed a bachelor's degree in computer science almost tripled from 2009 to 2022. Now IT specialists prefer that their own children receive working specialties, the website writes Dev.by with reference to the Wall Street Journal.

Many IT specialists now prefer humanities, arts or crafts as future professions for their children. They believe that artificial intelligence will soon take over the main functions in the IT industry.

Even chatbots warn that the younger generation would be better off developing their creative abilities and improving their people skills. If 20 years ago a career in IT was more promising and prestigious than in professions that involved manual labor, now more and more IT specialists are thinking about sending their children to study, for example, as electricians.

The Massachusetts Association of Vocational Administrators, which specializes in vocational and agricultural education and represents about 70 schools, says one in five high school students in the state is now enrolled in such programs. That's about 30 percent more than a decade ago. Vocational schools that used to accept just anyone are seeing an unprecedented influx of applicants, with hundreds of teens on waiting lists. The demand is so huge that high schools are reintroducing and increasing shop classes. The trend is happening across the country.

This is due, among other things, to the fact that schools are raising academic standards while at the same time providing applied skills that can keep children safe in the AI ​​era. In addition, children with such skills have a choice: to continue their studies at a university after school or to go straight to work.

The trend is not surprising given the thousands of layoffs in the tech industry and phenomena like vibe coding, where AI is doing a lot of the development. Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger also believes that development will require people to be able to solve higher-level problems, such as formulating a product strategy, understanding user needs, and generating ideas.
