The request from the U.S. Department of Agriculture coincides with the imposition of a series of new U.S. trade tariffs on many countries, including European ones, and the threat of additional charges. President Donald Trump has also threatened economic sanctions if Denmark does not hand over control of Greenland to the United States.
Wholesale U.S. egg prices are hitting records as a growing outbreak of bird flu among laying hens slashes supplies. Trump promised to lower egg costs on his first day as the 47th president, but prices have risen 59% year-on-year in February, the first full month of his administration.

A U.S. Department of Agriculture official in Europe sent formal inquiries to egg-producing countries in late February to inquire about their capacity and willingness to export the product to the U.S. market, according to a letter seen by Reuters.
"We are still waiting for further instructions from Washington, but do you have an estimate of the number of eggs that could be shipped to the United States (assuming they meet all import requirements)?" reads a letter sent to the Danish Egg Producers Association in early March.
"Washington is seeking to obtain an estimate of potential supply volumes," the letter, received last week, explained.
The Danish Egg Producers Association said it would look into the issue, although there is no surplus egg stock in Europe.
