The US and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire, with Tehran declaring it would open the Strait of Hormuz.
Following Pakistan's urgent diplomatic intervention, the United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire on the evening of April 7. This led to the lifting of Donald Trump's ultimatum demanding Tehran surrender or face massive, destructive attacks, writes The GuardianAs a result, the Islamic Republic proposed a 10-point plan that will help secure the ceasefire, reports Air force.
Trump's ceasefire announcement came less than two hours before his own 20:00 PM Eastern Time deadline to strike power plants and bridges in Iran. Lawyers and officials from several countries, as well as the Pope, warned that such actions could constitute war crimes.
The day before, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "An entire civilization will perish tonight, and it will never be brought back. I don't want it to happen, but it probably will." B-52 bombers were reportedly already en route to Iran before the ceasefire was announced.
On the subject: Trump promises to unleash hell on the Middle East if Iran doesn't open the Strait of Hormuz by April 7.
However, towards the evening of April 7, Trump announced that an agreement had been reached with Pakistani mediation: Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asked for a two-week pause to "allow diplomacy to work."
Trump wrote the following: “On the condition that the Islamic Republic of Iran agrees to a FULL, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I will authorize a suspension of bombing and attacks on Iran for a period of two weeks.”
According to him, during this period, the US and Iran will be able to hold negotiations on the 10-point plan proposed by Tehran, which will allow for the "finalization and consolidation of the ceasefire."
"This will be a bilateral CEASEFIRE!" he noted. "The reason is that we have already achieved and exceeded all military goals and have made significant progress toward a final agreement on long-term PEACE with Iran and PEACE in the Middle East."
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced shortly after Trump's announcement that Iran had agreed to a ceasefire.
"Within two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be ensured in coordination with the Iranian Armed Forces," he wrote.
The dramatic turn of events allows Trump to de-escalate after five weeks of US-Iran war, during which Tehran showed no sign of capitulation or relinquishing control of the Strait of Hormuz, a route through which about a fifth of the world's energy supplies pass, and through which shipping traffic has virtually ground to a halt.
Axios reports, citing an Israeli official, that Israel will also agree to a two-week ceasefire, which will take effect immediately after the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is lifted.
Trump had previously rejected Iran's proposed 10-point plan as "insufficient," but during the five-week conflict he has repeatedly set deadlines for ultimatums without enforcing them.
Iran's permanent representative to the UN, Amir-Saeed Iravani, said Trump's threats constituted "incitement to war crimes - and possibly genocide."
At a Security Council meeting on the Strait of Hormuz, he said: "Iran will not stand idly by in the face of such egregious war crimes. It will not hesitate to exercise its inherent right to self-defense and take immediate and proportionate retaliatory measures."
Through his spokesman, UN Secretary-General António Guterres recalled on April 6 that attacks on civilian infrastructure are prohibited under international law, but Trump said the same day that he was "not at all concerned" about being labeled a war criminal.
Hours before Trump's deadline, Israel launched its own strikes on Iranian infrastructure. Iranian state media reported that one of the first targets was a railway bridge in the central city of Kashan; two people were reportedly killed. The Israeli military reported "a large-scale series of strikes on dozens of infrastructure facilities."
Donald Trump mentioned a 10-point proposal in his post about the ceasefire, but the full proposal was revealed in a report on Iranian state television. According to his account, the points are as follows:
- Complete end to the war in Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.
- A complete and permanent end to the war against Iran without time limits.
- Ending all conflicts throughout the region.
- Opening of the Strait of Hormuz.
- Establishing a protocol and conditions to ensure freedom and safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
- Full compensation to Iran for reconstruction costs.
- Full commitment to lifting sanctions on Iran.
- Unlocking Iranian funds and frozen assets held by the United States.
- Iran completely rejects the idea of possessing any nuclear weapons.
- An immediate ceasefire will take effect on all fronts immediately upon approval of these conditions.
