Long queues formed in supermarkets as shoppers swept water, batteries and sheets of plywood from the shelves to board up windows in houses.

“There is still bread and batteries, but by one o’clock on Monday there was not a single bottle of water left,” Tweeted one of the visitors to a store in Williamsburg.

Neighboring South Carolina states are also preparing to meet with the hurricane.

North Carolina has imposed restrictions on agricultural transportation to free up roads for food transportation. Ships from the Norfolk base, the main naval base of the US Navy's Atlantic Fleet, located in Virginia, bordering North Carolina, are prepared to go out to sea to wait out the storm if necessary.
