'Smart' home and Zoom: an American schoolgirl in 1969 eerily accurately predicted the future

A letter written by an 11-year-old schoolgirl, whose name has not been released, predicts the invention of video calls in February 1969. It was found by a restorer inside old furniture and includes teacher's notes. The edition told in more detail Express.

A girl's letter containing eerily accurate predictions of the future in 1969 was found on the back of a sofa. Rosa Beckerton's husband, 67-year-old Peter, found the prophetic letter while refurbishing old furniture for a client. The letter, dated February 23, 1969, appears to have been written by an 11-year-old schoolgirl who predicted what the world would be like in 1980. She foresaw the digital revolution and even the use of Zoom.

Describing her future husband’s return home from work, the girl writes: “Hello, dear,” he told me. “I need to call my friend.”

“Well, you better clean yourself up a little,” I replied.”

“In 1969, the telephone was a square box with a receiver on top. Now it's still a receiver, but you can see the people you're talking to because there's a screen that shows the person you're talking to. It’s a little like TV,” the girl wrote.

Peter noticed a note on the back of the sofa. He was sent a sofa for restoration, which he bought second-hand.

In the hope that the author of the letter was still alive, Rose from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, decided to make Peter's find public.

She said, “When my husband showed it to me [the letter], I couldn't believe it. I thought, my God, look. It was so interesting because, looking at it today, many of her predictions turned out to be correct, but in her childish simplicity she thought that all this would happen in ten years.

“I just wanted to share it in hopes that the author will see it and recognize it. My husband has found all sorts of things under sofas and other furniture before, but never anything this interesting,” Rose explained.

The letter begins like this: “1980. Here I am, twenty-one years old, sitting on an air cushion. I remember when I was 11 years old, I went to school. A lot has changed since then, like television.”

“In 1969 it was a square box with handles in front of it. Now it’s a big screen with “handles” on the armrest of the chair to turn it on and off,” the girl writes.

Further, the schoolgirl imagines that she is a married bank employee.

She describes how, in the past, she "made tea" for her husband when he returned home.

And then the author writes: “All we have is chewing gum that we can eat. You will think that we do not have enough food, but you are wrong, because this chewing gum is food. You chew this gum and feel the food being absorbed. You can also taste it. After that, you don't have to wash the dishes."

She imagines that the doors of their house are "electric" and controlled by pressing a button.

The girl ends her letter with the words: “Indeed, when I remember these ten years, everything has changed a lot.”
