Singer and composer Toto Cutugno, an icon of Italian music in the world, has died

Toto Cutugno, one of the greatest Italian musicians, died on August 22 in Milan at the age of 80. LaVoceDiNewYork.

According to the manager of the artist Danilo Mancuso, Cutugno died "after a long illness with which he struggled." During the last few months he began to feel much worse and was admitted to the San Raffaele hospital in Milan. However, doctors were unable to save his life.

The cause of death is still unknown, but it is worth noting that the artist has been battling cancer for many years.

In 2007, Toto was diagnosed with a prostate tumor and was immediately operated on. In January 2009, the disease returned. He had to undergo chemotherapy. After that, he nevertheless resumed performances. It is also known that he did not have a right kidney, and he could not stand for a long time, reports UNIAN.

Cutugno was one of the most popular Italian artists worldwide, winning the 1990 Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Insieme: 1992".

He was also one of the most successful Italian songwriters of all time, writing for artists such as Dalida, Adriano Celentano and Domenico Modugno. Cutugno was considered a true ambassador of Italian music in the world, especially in countries such as Romania, Spain, Turkey, Germany and Russia. His song "L'Italiano", released in 1983, has been translated into many languages ​​and is considered a symbol of Italian culture and identity.

Toto Cutugno competed fifteen times at the Sanremo Music Festival, but won only once, in 1980, with the song "Solo noi". He also placed second six times with songs such as "Serenata", "Figli", "Emozioni" and "Le mamme".
