Ukrainian producer in Hollywood created a dramatic short film about Internet addiction

According to statistics, teens spend up to 9 hours a day online. 30 percent of this time, they communicate in social networks. According to UNICEF, 89 percent of children aged 13 to 17 face harassment and humiliation. Including, on the Internet. And this is a serious problem that can both morally traumatize and kill a person’s life.

Director Vladislav Akushevich and producer Nika Finch decided to draw attention to the situation by filming a short video called Get Off Screen. The plot revolves around a family who goes on vacation to a country house in the forest. Upon arrival, the father takes the router away from the children, which causes a big scandal. Finch, who had previously produced many projects - from music videos to feature films - happily took on the idea. A young director came with her to Nika, asking her to become the producer of the project.

“I knew for sure that this was a noble and useful cause. The film itself is about technology addiction. And how this addiction can destroy families. We decided to show in a few minutes how parents who are too busy make the mistake of teaching their children to gadgets from a young age. It’s as if they are trying to temporarily replace themselves as both a parent and a teacher,” Finch explained.

“Plus, we show the current acute problem of online bullying, as well as things that children cannot yet understand due to their age. We brought the main issues into three scenes into one point: the tantrums of children who were “hooked” on the Internet, bullying on the Internet and how a nine-year-old girl heard the word “slut” and did not know what it meant,” she added.

Get Off Screen was filmed over two days - December 22 and 23, 2018. They filmed in two houses - a house in the forest and the house of friends of the actors who played in the film. The production time was very tight - 10 days. During this time, Nika Finch did the impossible: she prepared the locations, found a film crew and persuaded the actors to star in the project.

Vladislav Akushevich said that his film wanted to draw attention to the important problem of parents and children. He wanted to do it as quickly as possible, so he turned to Nick.

“Often parents don’t even see what’s happening to their children if they are passionate about technology. Of course, when children are connected to the Internet, they develop and gain some knowledge. But at the same time, there are no socialization skills. We are not saying that it is necessary to completely isolate them from the global network. She became a part of our life. We are saying that this should not be a bad habit,” the director explained.

“I was so fired up by this idea that I went to the only person who could realize my idea quickly and efficiently. She agreed. As a result, in ten days we sprinted the distance that marathon runners usually run. I have never experienced such pleasant stress,” Akushevich noted.
