Ukrainian pilots will be trained in the USA: they will be taught how to fly F-16 fighters

In October, the United States will begin flight training of Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets, said Pentagon.

Training will begin after the pilots complete English language training next month at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, Pentagon spokesman Gen. Pat Ryder said. Flight training will take place in Arizona, Ryder said. Training will begin in October at Morris Air National Guard Air Force Base in Tucson and will be facilitated by the Air National Guard's 162nd Wing.

He could not name the exact number of Ukrainians who will undergo training. “We expect several pilots and dozens of technicians to participate in the training,” a Pentagon spokesman said.

Ryder said the full training cycle would likely take several months, depending on the qualifications of the pilots participating in the course.
According to Ryder, the US-led exercise "supports international efforts to develop and strengthen Ukraine's long-term defense."

BACKGROUND

The Netherlands and Denmark announced their intention to provide Ukraine with F-16 aircraft from their fleet. On August 24, the Prime Minister of Norway announced that his country would also provide F-16s to Ukraine.

Denmark has begun training eight Ukrainian pilots to fly the F-16. They arrived at the Danish military air base at Skrydstrup along with 65 employees who will receive training in aircraft maintenance, reports Reuters.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, in a letter to his European counterparts last week, signaled the United States' readiness to approve a third-party transfer of US-made F-16s to Ukraine.

“Going forward, we will continue to consult closely with the Danes, Dutch and other allies to complement the coalition's broader training efforts,” Ryder said.

US President Joe Biden in May approved training programs for Ukrainian pilots on the F-16.

During a briefing last week, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said US approval for the transfer would come after consultations with Congress and after Ukrainian pilot training was completed.

What will be taught

This training includes a series of courses ranging from basic flight training to basic fighter flight, weapon use, combat maneuvering and tactical interception, among other concepts.

In addition to flight training, Ryder said, the F-16s require extensive logistics and maintenance training for ground personnel to keep the aircraft operational.

Language preparation before learning is also very important. It ensures that all pilots have sufficient language skills to fully understand the "complex and specialized knowledge of the English language required to fly the aircraft," Ryder said.

“The Ukrainian people have inspired the world with their courage and determination to defend their right to live in a sovereign, democratic and free country,” said Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin on Ukraine's Independence Day, August 24.
