Ukrainian pennies offered to rename in rubles
In the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine introduced a bill on the renaming of Ukrainian kopecks into rubles.
The report on the website of the presidential bloc of Petro Poroshenko states that the bill was introduced by a deputy of the parliamentary faction of the bloc Oleg Musiy. The deputy explained his initiative by the need to restore historical justice.
The deputy claims that historically the smallest in relation to the hryvnia monetary unit in Kievan Rus was called the ruble. Pennies, according to Musia, appeared in Ukraine only after the country gained independence and the proclamation of the hryvnia as the main monetary unit.
“The adoption of the draft law will restore historical justice in the use of the name ruble as a smaller part of the monetary unit in Ukraine – the hryvnia,” Musiy noted.
The hryvnia in Kievan Rus was called the silver bar, used as money. The ruble, according to the Great Soviet Encyclopedia, did originally designate a part that was cut off from the hryvnia.
