A Ukrainian woman was arrested during a marriage-based green card interview in California.

A routine green card interview ended with the detention of a Ukrainian woman living in San Diego. The detention, as is now customary, was carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Human rights activists call this a disturbing trend observed not only in California but throughout the country, writes ABC News.

Earlier this week, Victoria Korol was taken into custody during a routine immigration procedure. Her husband, Viktor Korol, told ABC 10News that the incident left them completely devastated.

"We love each other very much," Victor assured, recalling how his wife supported him during his battle with cancer and chemotherapy. "She was very supportive and encouraging."

He is now in remission.

The couple showed up for their scheduled interview, expecting a routine procedure. Instead, ICE officers arrested Victoria at the end of the interview.

"We went to an interview for her green card," Victor said. "After the interview, ICE officers arrested her."

Their immigration lawyer, Caroline Matthews, says Victoria has no criminal record—either in the US or abroad. She has always been in the country legally, as required by immigration laws.

"People are taken away without any notice of the reasons, the charges against them, or why they are subject to deportation," Matthews noted. "Victoria has complied with all the rules, has always had her authorized periods of stay, and has no immigration or criminal violations."

Moreover, according to Matthews, Victoria isn't listed in ICE's online system. Because of this, neither her family nor even her lawyer have access to the charges, the notice to appear, or the warrant. They also have no way to communicate with her.

“I can’t contact my wife because I don’t know exactly where she is,” Victor emphasized.

Matthews believes that cases of immigrants being detained with little or no explanation are becoming more common.

"This appears to be a tactic that is clearly unconstitutional," she concluded. "We intend to continue fighting for Victoria and other non-citizens who suffer in this way."

For Victor, the most important thing is to bring his wife home: “I just want her to get out of there, finish her green card application, and for us to return to our old, normal life.”

Her husband expects Victoria to be transferred to the Otay Mesa Detention Center to await her court hearing.
