Ukraine and Moldova are preparing to begin formal negotiations on EU accession as early as June.

Hungarian authorities have indicated that they may abandon their previous position against Ukraine joining the European Union, diplomats told the publication. Politico.

Hungary has signaled its willingness to drop its long-standing objections to Ukraine's EU membership bid. According to diplomats, this will allow Kyiv and Chisinau to move in the coming days to formal negotiations on joining an entity that combines the characteristics of an international organization and a state.

The first negotiating cluster—the formal stage on the path to membership—is planned to open on June 15 in Luxembourg at an intergovernmental conference, they clarified.

Ukraine and Moldova applied for membership simultaneously, so Chisinau's progress is directly dependent on Kyiv's.

Budapest staunchly opposed Ukraine's accession to the EU under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. However, the country's new leadership privately indicated its willingness to lift its veto. This occurred after a meeting of Ukrainian and Hungarian experts on June 1. They discussed the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine, according to diplomats who asked not to be identified due to the closed nature of the talks.

One Hungarian official stated that “no decision” has yet been made on opening negotiation clusters on Ukraine.

"Negotiations are ongoing. There is no agreement," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the discussions are being held behind closed doors.

As one diplomat stated, at the June 1 meeting, the Ukrainian side presented guarantees for resolving most of the issues in the 11-point plan, drafted under Orbán. Not all of Hungary's demands can be met immediately, but, as the diplomat noted, Budapest's agreement is not contingent on the immediate adoption of new laws in Ukraine.

Ukraine's membership negotiations accelerated following Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar's visit to Brussels, where he met with EU leaders and discussed the release of €16,4 billion in frozen EU funds, the same source reported.

According to him, EU ambassadors plan to agree on a position on opening the first cluster for Ukraine and Moldova by the end of this week, after Kyiv presents plans for internal reforms and addressing the issue of national minorities. Final approval for the cluster's opening is expected at the intergovernmental conference on June 15.

The opening of negotiating clusters requires the unanimous approval of all 27 EU countries. Any one of them can block the process at any stage—both during the launch of the first cluster and in subsequent steps on the path to membership.
