Ukraine legalized medications based on cannabis

The Ukrainian government has decided to legalize some cannabis-based medicines. Writes about it The Village.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has made changes to the list of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors. Therefore, some cannabis-based drugs are no longer on this list.

According to the decree, such cannabis-based drugs are allowed:

• Nabilon (synthetic cannabinoid). It is used to treat the side effects of cancer chemotherapy (vomiting, neuropathic pain).
• Nabiximols (a standardized cannabis extract that has the same THC and cannabidiol content). This drug relieves pain and muscle spasms in multiple sclerosis.

“The circulation of psychotropic substances dronabinol, nabilone (synthetic cannabinoids that imitate the effect of THC) and nabiximols (a standardized cannabis extract with the same content of THC and cannabidiol) is allowed only in the form of medicines or in the form of substances intended for the production and manufacture of such medicines,” - states the government decree.

There are more than two million people in Ukraine who can be helped by treatment with medications based on medical cannabis. In 2019, the capital of the country hosted the "Hemp March of Freedom". People demanded to legalize cannabis.

At the same time, a petition appeared to legislate access to medical cannabis. After that, the corresponding bill was registered in the Verkhovna Rada. It should authorize the circulation of medical cannabis in Ukraine, as well as give the right to scientists to research cannabis. The Human Rights Committee supported him. But in Ukraine, both the use of drugs based on cannabis and cannabis research were still banned.

Possession of cannabis in a small size (up to 5 grams) is subject to a fine or correctional labor. If the amount of cannabis exceeds 5 grams, criminal liability occurs (restriction of freedom up to three years).
