'Left for the USA': scandal with the escaped former friend of Zelensky

On Thursday, April 11, ex-participant and co-founder of the humor studio “Kvartal 95” Denis Manzhosov announced a press conference in Kyiv. At it, the once best friend of comedian Vladimir Zelensky was going to talk about the behind the scenes of KVN and Kvartal, and also shed light on why colleagues stopped working together and even communicating. He later said that at the venue he met “former friends” from Kvartal and changed his mind about communicating with the press. And earlier this morning he was allegedly threatened.

We sat at the same desk

At school, Denis Manzhosov and Vladimir Zelensky were best friends. They even sat at the same desk. In 1997, Manzhosov, Zelensky and Alexander Pikalov, also an actor in “Kvartal,” created their own KVN team “95 Kvartal.” It was on its basis that the studio later appeared.

Kvartal did not comment on the causes of the conflict

The conflict between colleagues occurred in early 2013. At the same time, Manzhosov left Kvartal and disappeared from television screens. The studio's press service only said that they had stopped working with the artist, but did not talk about the reasons.

“I don’t really want to discuss this topic, because such moments in life are quite difficult and do not pass easily internally. There’s a lot of stress in my life, and it’s difficult for me to remember what happened again,” Ukrainian media quoted Zelensky at the time.

In turn, comedian Evgeny Koshevoy also avoided answering such questions. All that the actor said during an interview with the publication “Arguments and Facts” about the conflict with Manzhosov was that “there are no irreplaceable people.”

“We do not maintain relations with Denis, he lives in the USA. Manzhosov went there for permanent residence. I won’t tell anyone what happened, because it’s personal for every “Kvartal” member. There was a scandal, there is nothing more to say. He himself apparently wanted it that way. We don’t keep anyone, there are no irreplaceable people,” Koshevoy shrugged it off.

Did you go to the USA for permanent residence?

A year after the news about the conflict, it became known that Denis Manzhosov had founded his own event agency and was organizing concerts and weddings. The actor really left Ukraine and lived for some time in the USA. But already in 2018, he returned and tried to pass the casting of the host to some Ukrainian TV shows. Obviously unfortunate.

In the same year, Manzhosov’s name appeared among the authors of a popular video on YouTube called “Leaf to the Moscow Shaitan.” The video was timed to coincide with Defender of Ukraine Day. It starred Vasily Virastyuk, Victor Bronyuk, Oleg Sobchuk and other celebrities. Manzhosov acted as director.

Zelensky: “I would be able to meet this person and talk”

In January 2018, the leader of the Kvartal, Vladimir Zelensky, gave an interview to the publication KP in Ukraine. In response to a question about the scandal with Manzhosov, the comedian said that he could meet with his former colleague and talk.

“This is a very difficult question... Everyone knows me as a very loyal person. I can get angry, but I'm an easy-going person. I would probably be able to meet this person and talk. It’s just that so many years have passed... Everything is changing so quickly. And I don’t know who needs this today. But no matter how painful it was for me before, this does not mean that I would not listen to the person, would not talk to him. I’m not afraid of such things <…> I believe that everyone in the world and in life makes mistakes. When they say: “We must give a second chance,” I agree, it is necessary. Some people, if they are normal, should be given five chances. And if a person is a scumbag (I’m not talking about my ex-comrade), then he doesn’t deserve even one,” Zelensky emphasized.

Pikalov: “They gave me money. There is such information"

Ex-Kvartal participant Denis Manzhosov decided to hold a press conference for the reason that he was “given money.” This is how Alexander Pikalov commented on the failed event.

“If a person is given money, he can say anything. And they gave me money, there is such information,” he said.

The humorist and his colleague Artem Gagarin also came to the press conference, but they were not allowed. It soon became known that it did not take place at all.

Got drunk and began to accuse Zelensky of all sins?

After the conflict, Denis Manzhosov tried to return to Kvartal, but his former colleagues did not forgive him. Journalist Yuri Kot wrote about this on Facebook shortly after the failed press conference. In his post, he also noted that he witnessed the incident.

“I witnessed the situation when Manzhosov got drunk and was openly rude to Zelensky, accusing him of all his sins. He also got into a fight then. Yuzik pulled me away. Volodya was then very offended and kicked him out. Then for a long time Denis was looking for a reason to return to Kvartal. But the team didn’t forgive him,” said Kot.

Now, according to the journalist, Manzhosov decided to take revenge on his former colleagues.

Manzhosov: “They’ve been threatening me all morning”

Journalists who arrived at the press conference site claimed that they saw Manzhosov there 45 minutes before the start. Soon Denis Ivanesko, director of Ukrainian News, in whose press center they were waiting for a press conference, confirmed that the comedian was in the hall, but went out to smoke, got into the car and drove away. After that we lost contact with him.

Later, an SMS message was sent to the number of the press center employees: “I’ve been getting calls, texts, threats, etc. all morning. I arrived, saw my former friends and changed my mind. I apologize to everyone present. Within 2 hours I will record and post my appeal. I think this will be right. Manzhosov."
