Scientists have discovered a planet where it rains from iron

Researchers have discovered a planet far from Earth, where, they believe, it rains from iron. Independent.

On one side of the planet there is a constant day, due to which the temperature there reaches 2400 degrees Celsius (4352 Fahrenheit). This leads to the evaporation of metal on the surface of the planet, which is subsequently carried by strong winds, to the other side of the cosmic body, where it is constant night and much cooler. There, the iron vapor is cooled and condensed into droplets, which then fall to the surface in the form of rain.

“You could say that the evenings on this planet are rainy, except that the rain is iron,” says David Ehrenreich, a professor at the University of Geneva in Switzerland who led the study that discovered the exotic planet.

This planet was called WASP-76b, it is located at a distance of 640 light-years in the constellation Pisces.

The reasons for such an extreme environment is that the “day side” of the planet always faces its parent star. On the other, “night” side there is eternal darkness. The planet rotates according to the same principle as the Moon, which is why only one side of it is always facing the star.

The day side receives heat from the star many thousand times more than we get on Earth. The heat causes the molecules to decay into atoms, due to which the evaporated metal enters the atmosphere.

Scientists argue that the temperature difference between the two sides of the planet creates a strong wind across the planet, blowing iron fumes from the hot side to the cold side and dumping them in the form of rain.

In addition to different temperatures, both sides of the planet have a different chemical composition. Astronomers watched the planet using the ESPRESSO instrument on the Very Large Telescope, with the help of which clear differences were found between the two sides of the astronomical body.
