Scientists in the United States have found a way to save endangered animals: they will be cloned

American scientists have cloned an endangered animal for the first time. It turned out to be a black-footed ferret. This was reported by the US Fish and Wildlife Conservation Service. RIA News".

The animal was named Elizabeth Ann. The ferret was born in December 2020, but it was decided to publish information about him only now.

The cloning was done thanks to the frozen genes of another ferret, who died more than thirty years ago. During the experiment, two clones were born, but, unfortunately, only one survived.

“Biotechnology and genomic data can make a difference in efforts to preserve the environment,” said Ben Novak, lead scientist at the nonprofit conservation organization Revive & Restore.

Scientists believe there are many other endangered species that may need cloning. They include the Mongolian wild horse and the extinct wandering pigeon as priority ones.

However, scientists are concerned that the next cloned ferrets will lack genetic diversity. This can make them susceptible to various parasites and diseases.

Black-footed ferrets are a type of weasel that is easily recognizable by the dark markings on their eyes. They are nocturnal and feed on prairie dogs.
